How Yoga Has Increased My Spirituality
Awareness
Yoga increases my spirituality because it creates awareness. In yoga, the first place that most people become aware of is their physical body. When you start practicing yoga, your physical limitations become obvious, and that awareness can be frustrating. After you come to terms with your physical challenges your attention can be turned to your mind. Most yoga classes will start with focusing on two key things when you start meditating: your breathing and quieting your mind. One of the advantages to yoga is the practice can help give you the patience to meditate. The time you spend meditating can start out in small increments. When you get better at meditating, you begin to realize that your entire yoga practice can be a moving meditation. Through my yoga practice, I have fallen in love with meditating. I find peace, inspiration, and creativity through meditation.
Creating my own spirituality
The connection between yoga and spirituality became important to me 15 years ago. At that time, I decided to no longer be part of the religion I was born and raised into. I wanted to find my own beliefs, rather than force my inherited beliefs. For the first ten years, I worked hard to erase the connection I believed was between religion and spirituality. Creating spirituality on my own terms excited me. No rules, no expectations, and definitely, no men telling me what to do. The more yoga and meditation practices I research, the more I define what my spirituality looks like. I feel empowered to define my beliefs as things that resonate with me. No one else has to believe what I believe and that feels great. I don’t have to defend my beliefs because I don’t need anyone to follow me. One of my main purposes in teaching yoga is to inspire others to customize their own spirituality as I have my own.
